1937- . English painter, printmaker, and
designer, resident in California. He
exhibited at the Young Contemporaries Show of
1961 and contributed to the Pop art movement.
He developed an individual figurative style,
as in his portrait Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy
1971, Tate Gallery, London, and has
prolifically experimented with technique. His
views of swimming pools reflect a
preoccupation with surface pattern and
effects of light. He has also produced
drawings, etchings, photo collages, and sets
for opera. Hockney, born in Yorkshire,
studied at Bradford School of Art and the
Royal College of Art, London. He was the
subject of Jack Hazan's semidocumentary 1974
film A Bigger Splash; it is also the title of
one of his paintings (1967, Tate Gallery,
London). He has designed sets for the opera
at Glyndebourne, East Sussex, La Scala,
Milan, and the Metropolitan Opera House, New
York.
